St. Albans

On our first  day in England, we ventured out to St. Albans, where grandpa Anderson was born and raised. Our first stop of the day was at one of the houses he grew up in. We decided to knock on the door and see if we could take a look inside. Helen, the owner was more than gracious to let us strangers come into her home. They have remodeled a lot since dad lived there, but they were able to talk and visit for a while.
After that we went to the downtown area to the clock tower and walked around a bit before stopping for lunch at The Boot, a pub that had been there since the 1400's.
Following lunch, we headed over to the cemetery that grandma Anderson is buried in. Even though we forgot the paper that said where her grave was, we were able to find her fairly quickly and find that everything looked well (except the flowers Llew and I planted 17 years ago didn't grow).
When we left the cemetery we went to the St. Albans cathedral that they started building in 1077 and finished in 1893! It was very impressive!
Form the cathedral we drove over to the Gustardwood house that great grandma Anderson worked at and grandpa Anderson got to run around and play at. We decided to knock on the door there and see if we could look around that house also. The lady of the house was a little suspicious of me when I first asked her and she said we could look around the yard. then her husband came out and we talked to him for a bit and he invited us to come in for a visit. We walked around the yard and then went inside and visited with Simon and Jennifer about the history of the house. It was quite a nice visit there before making our final stop at the old mill very briefly before it started to rain (again).
